My architect drew plans for my extension and proposed that the roof be constructed using steel hip beams and steel ridge beam, (see dotted line on drawing) and that I would need a structeral enginneer to specify the steels. I contacted an on line SE firm regarding this and he came back with a proposal to use a timber ring beam and rafters being the hip and ridge non-structural beams (timber boards). He said that this would be cheaper and more rational.
Please can anyone advise the merits of either method?
Many thanks.
