Hi there,

We've got a few stepped hairline cracks generally along the line of the mortar (some go through the bricks as well) in the brickwork of our house in a few different places. We moved in last year and the Homebuyer's Survey just recommended filling them in with translucent sealant as they are nothing to worry about and I think they said they might be thermal cracks.

The external brickwork is painted white and is need of repainting soon.

We thought of asking the decorator if they could fill in the cracks with some kind of filler before we get the house repainted. However, we've just taken a closer look at one particular area and are not sure if the cracks have got a little bit wider, possibly due to the hot weather? It's also possible that it's not changed at all but we've just noticed it properly for the first time (it's quite high on the wall and not easy to see).

We'd like to get the problem sorted before we get it painted and just wondering who is the best type of tradesperson to ask to come and take a look - whose specialty is this?

Any tips on what kind of filler would be the best to use to try and prevent it from happening again?

Thanks
