Has anyone out there any information on using phenolic boards covered by render to insulate a house? I've had quotes to do this on a renovation project but they are all so expensive if you go to 'recommended installers' as there are so many middle men all taking their cut- it can't be that difficult for a good builder to do- has anyone done this themselves and what product did you use? Our architect has planned for us to use 80mm thick board.

They are all very expensive - purely because they are unique, specialist and relatively new and don't sell as well traditional methods

When I have looked at these cladding systems, the prices have been a joke for what they are

The STO systems are pretty good, I've never used them on a refurb only new build as mentioned they're silly money.

It seems you can't buy many of these systems as they all have to be applied by registered installers! I have found that you can buy Kingspan from various sources- does anyone know if there are any other brands that 'ordinary people' can buy? Did you buy Sto brand and install it? If so where did you get it from?

Be aware of rule changes in October 2010 - Approved Document L1B "Conservation of fuel and power in existing dwellings". If it is feasible, you will have to reduce the U-value of the wall to 0.3 W/m²/K (Table 3). This work is notifiable to Local Authority Building Control.

tell them tooo stick there paper work up there #@*"!!~ ^*@!

systems are not expensive if you consider the savings over a few years, 7 to 8grand will get your normal semi insulated and renderd, goverment grants will cover most of the cost, keep away from sto its just to expensive!

this rendering you can doo as you can buy it all from a good builders merchents if done 4 since i started plastering but is it a two man thing

Thanks for this- if you used the Kingspan what did you do for render on top- I gather there are 2 to 3 coats that go on top. The companies with recommended installers issue warranties- do you know what can go wrong? is it mainly cracking to the render?

We are working with the Building Control people and they are happy with our proposed system.

I agree. Any amount of insulation added to an existing building should be gratefully accepted. I'm not convinced that adding so much insulation won't be detrimental to the fabric, especially to listed buildings - I can't see they can be sure it will be OK for 200 years. I think Grade I listed buildings are exempt but I'm not sure about Grade II and/or Conservation Areas.
