External Door Replacement

I am seeking to replace my external aluminium French doors.

Once the existing door and frame are removed, the opening dimensions will be:

- Height: 2050mm
- Width: 1300mm

I’ve had difficulty finding a company that offers composite French doors suitable for a narrow opening.

After finally locating a supplier who can accommodate the 1300mm width, I am now faced with a height dilemma.

I have two options:

1. Order a door without a sill and use a AM370 aluminium threshold (which would meet my height requirement of 2050mm).

2. Order a door with a sill and AM370 aluminium threshold, but the minimum height for this is 2069mm, which is 19mm taller than my opening.

Questions:
- Is a sill necessary?
- I’ve attached a photo of the current door. There is a row of bricks beneath the frame. Can I cut out the 19mm from the bricks to accommodate a sill, or is there a minimum clearance needed between the door bottom and the ground?

Many thanks

Hi Steve,
Firstly, yes sill is necessary, for many reasons, such as weather proofing, water drainage, levelling if the floor is uneven etc.
As it comes to cutting bricks, you might be ok regarding regulations, but it will increase a risk for flooding or damp. If you still decide to choose this option, make sure you have a drainage channel under the door.
Most important, don't forget to account for new frame and allow 10-20mm. for tolerance.
And Finally,************ consider steel doors, which*****************would last far longer then composite doors, ******************

Thank you for your concern crank39,
And you are right, I skipped some of the text. But since you brought this up I read it all and still can't find any rules I'm breaking. Would you mind pointing it out please?
