Hi, i wish to add an external double socket in the garden for lighting. I had it in my head that I would place an RCD fused switch to the outside of the house. This would be connected to main ring main by a spur. I would then tske armoured cable from this switch to the double socket. It seems the most logical way to do this unless someone can suggest a better way.

Any particular reason for having the RCD on the outside? Is the consumer unit RCD protected? You could just use a fused switch on the inside and then a weatherproof external junction box. Gives you the option of switching whatever has been plugged in, off from the inside and saves needing a weatherproof fused switch.

Hi, motorbiking, yes it is Rcd on the consumer unit, so I guess i can do away with another Rcd. I have nowhere to add the fused switch on the inside so was going to take a spur of a double socket in the house straight outside and sit the fused switch externally.

You don't need the fuse either. Or the switch, but people like to have them in case water gets in. But if you fit a decent outside socket properly that won't happen anyway. And if you can't fit it properly the water could get into an external fused switch as well.
