I am having a loft conversion and have a hob extractor fan that vents into a chimney. My builder is telling me today that he can remove the chimney and he can put in a vent and vent under the floorboards in the loft instead. I said is this ok and he is telling me yes.

Does this sound right as I can't find any mention of this searching the web?

I'm not sure if he mean't just vent under the floorboards or run a vent from the chimney and vent outside via the floorboards. I assumed the former but it was a last minute conversation so wasn't thinking straight.

Any advice on what this may mean and whether it is a bad idea?

Stink the house out.

run a vent from the chimney and vent outside via the floorboards.

Is the sensible option. Not sure if your current extraction vents into the chimney and stops or what. If it does that really does need to be vented outside the envelope of the building should you not change the concept as discussed above.

You need to find out what he means.

It needs to vent outside via a sealed pipe. Discharging into the house anywhere is definitely not a good plan.

Whatever the solution the pipe needs to find the shortest route to the outside and the possibility of condensate gathering within the pipe will either need to be dealt with or the duct insulated to prevent this happening.
