hi Hmm2008

Be very careful of what you are doing, take your time to be sure that you are doing the right thing.
Do you still have the old fan, to check how it was connected at the first place?
Is your new fan on a timer module
does it required an external fuse
is your hold fan had an isolation switch somewhere on the top in the room
do you have the instruction manual
I just finished to fit a new fan in my ensuite, if you describe to me exactly what is your situation i might be able to help you.
My situation was new fan no need earth so i left the earth in the fuse box as my fan required a fuse between the power supply and the fan. so I had 3 wires going to the fan, L permanant live, N neutral, T switched live.
If you have a tester to check which wire is thes witched live by playing with the wall switch or pull cord ( be very careful again) when you identify that on the other one should be the permanant live & the neutral.

Thanks for your reply. Just fitted and it's working just fine.... but I can't help worrying whether it'd go wrong later on.

yes, new fan is on a timer module and so was the old one. in the instruction it says 'A double pole spur having a contact seperation of at least 3mm inall poles MUST beusedandfitted with 3 amp fuse and must be sited outside the room'. The fan has a isolation switch outside on top of the wall, so that must be it then?? I don'thave to worry about the fuse thingy??

The old one.... make: Airflow, model: loovent 01. It has N,T,L lines to go in and a place for earth wire to go.

New fan. I bought it from Homebase for £43. It has Neutral, switched live and permanent live lines. It does not require an earth (says so on the instruction).I let the earth wire hanging inside the fan. wouldi t be ok?

there are 4 wires fromthe ceiling. earth, blue, yellow and red.

I've connected the redto permanentlive, yellow to switched live and of course theblue to the neutral.

Yes thats right mate, just put the earth in a bit of connector with sleeving on it.
Jobs a good un :)

I hope that the cable that supplies the fan is earthed though?

as far as I know, the isolation switch outside the room is not a fuse so I think to comply with your fan requirements you still need to fit a fuse in between the isolator and the fan.
If Iam wrong please some one say something
