My recirculating extractor hood has stopped recirculating after 15 years of daily use.

The light still turns off and on, no fan spin at all, not even an attempt. 2 things I've just found out:

1. It doesn't look like it's been installed from a fused spur that I can see (no switch or box or anything on the wall unless it's behind the cooker below and run up the back of the wall which I can't see). So I can't really just swap it for a new one without installing it properly which will be £££££ I don't have.
2. It's never been run with carbon filters in the whole time I've lived here (from 2010). I only found out these were supposed to be used when I read the manual that the previous owners had left.

The motor assembly is available for just over £88. The motor on its own is £70

Is it worth a try isolating the supply, taking this assembly out, giving it a good clean and degrease to see if I can resurrect it or is it not worth the hassle? The capacitor is available separately for about £20 but I have a feeling it might be easier just to replace the whole motor assembly and chuck this one. Is there a way of checking if the capacitor is toast but the motor is good?

Why can't you swap it?
A Fused Connector Unit (the cable is the spur) is not mandatory.

Only need filters if it does not extract to outside.
If it doesn't extract to outside then you might as well not have used it for the fifteen years.

Ok.

Up to you. I would have a go.

Do you have a multi meter?

Ah ok - I didn't know that. That might be an option as they are not even that expensive. It's been rammed in to a bit of cut coving and had filler put down the sides so it may look a bit crap afterwards if I rip it out but I can probably fix that.

It doesn't extract to the outside!

No multimeter - although I subsequentially found this post from an engineer that was helpful. He gives instructions for replacing the motor but as the whole assembly is not much more I might just do that. I will look at how much damage getting the old one off will do first though.

I might give it a go this weekend and take it out strip it down and give it a good clean for the sake of a few hours work. Thanks for the advice.
