my laptop has 2 x 512MB PC2-4200 SO DIMM memory modules..

one of which I think is up the spout.. leaving me with 512MB on a XP MCE system..

so i think I need to upgrade to a couple of 1GB modules, but I can only find cheap generic ones in PC2-4200 and would like to spend a little more for branded ones..

can i use faster rated ones such as 5300 or 6400?

will they happily clock at lower speeds?

You can usually put faster RAM in as it will run at lower clock speeds OK.
However, it has to be the right type or it may not even fit.
