Virtually ever since we had our central heating system installed 2 years ago we have had an intermittant fault whereby the pump still runs even though the hot water and heating system is turned off. The only way to stop it is by switching off at the power socket in the airing cupboard. Usually if left switched off for a while the pump stops when you then switch the power back on and we don't get the problem for ages. The problem is now worse ........ Today the pump wont switch off despite repeatedly going through the procedure I mentioned. Does this mean that a possible 'dicky' microswitch has now failed completely? Our heating engineer was unable to help us with the problem because each time we called him it righted itself but presumably now it will be easy to locate which one is at fault?? Is there anything else that might be causing this? Many thanks

If it's just the pump running and not the boiler as well, it's unlikely to be a problem with the switches in the Zone valves. Unusually, none of the Icos heat-only versions seem to have a 'pump live' connection on the boiler, so the pump SHOULD be energised off the same terminal in the wiring centre as the boiler. If this is the case, it's hard to see how the pump can run without the boiler.......

I think I am confusing things here. The boiler is in the loft so I can't see what's going on. I have always thought (bear in mind I know nothing about central heating systems) that what I can here is just the pump running/water circulating, but maybe it is the boiler. All I know for sure is that when the Digi wireless thermostat shows that it's reached temp and the hot water is nice and hot and I manually switch off at the control panel the boiler/pump still runs. I then have to switch off at the power supply.

It has at last switched itself off properly for the first time today.

Are you sure its not the boiler internal frost stat kicking in (or external wall mounted frost thermostat kicking in) now that the cold weathers arrived.
