im not keen to ask about price comparisons,as thats not really the point of the site but i find in the situation im in, dont have a great deal of choice
the fence in the photos is eight and a bit panels long at the bottom of my garden.neighbours had it put up and says its over a grand in costs.
is that reasonable or not?
seems a lot and im being asked to contribute just under a third.there are 4 panels on my neighbours garden on my right and 4 on mine.also my neighbour on the side is also contributing the work involved cutting back the hawthorne hedge for 50 % of the length.
the other 50% on my side was already cut back and removed before the fence was ercted

Well, the panels will by shy of £20 trade so £190 (including the "bit").

Plus posts, concrete, etc. Maybe £300 for bits - probably somewhat cheaper.

Does the £1k include VAT? If so then the actual bill was £820, minus £300 means £520 for the labour plus profit (businesses appreciate profit).

How many guys? Two for one day or for two days? If it was two guys for two days, then let's say £100 per person per day all-in employment costs, which equates to a wage of ~£60 a day or £14k per year for each employee.

Leaving £120 for the profit.

Seems reasonable to me.

hi skotl
they carried out the work today. 2 lads on the fence and 2 more called in to
to remove the hawthorn although they were here a couple of hours
so not that far away from what you say. cheers for that
i think most people, probably myself included, think fences get put up for peanuts

No worries, Terence

The other point that people often overlook is that contractors don't necessarily get paid every working day of the week - they will often go to price up jobs and not get the gig, have to spend some time remediating previous jobs (maybe their fault, maybe not) and then just general travelling time. So sometimes people look at a price, multiple by 250 working days in the year, and then exclaim "my painter earns £90k a year!"

Glad I helped set your mind at rest - like you, I hate the nagging thought that I might be being taken advantage of.

Update
Just had a chat with the fence man. His supplier can't get a 3 way post but oddly enough the chap coming tomorrow to give me a price for the rest says he can get a 3 way post just by ordering one
Rang The neighbour at the bottom and the final price is just over £1200, that's for eight 7ft panels and two at 18 inches

The question seems odd to me. If the fence is on the boundary, and the neighbour is responsible for the boundary, then you do not need to pay anything, in fact you should not. Conversely, if you are responsible, you should pay. If responsibility is shared (is that possible?) then they should have agreed with you on a contractor and price beforehand. If the fence is not on the boundary, and on their side, then it is nothing to do with you.

I was quoted £300 per panel to erect. I think £150 is more like it. So your price sounds okay, but it depends on the area of the country since labour is the main charge, and currently there is high demand due to the storms.

mikeey does that include bottom of garden fences, not just left or right hand side
all my workmates think the 1200 is a pizz take but we are all diyers so hey ho

Have you checked your deeds? They should tell you who is responsible for the boundary. I think you can also get a copy of your neighbour's deeds. It sounds like you don't know.

I don't know the boundaries but the main agreement here is a quarter of costs from me, quarter fr neighbour on right and guy who got the fencing man pays rest
Just not keen on look of that silly little panel smack in middle and its connected to a two way post , a three way would have been much more helpful. Fencing guy says his supplier does not have 3 way posts
In other words that's what your getting

To be fair, never checked the bit about the bottom fences, as they were replaced by the other householder before i moved in, and are in good nick.
