I’m just about to fit a new radiator and just had a query as to what peoples thought were about using some jointing compound over the olives

Is this just one of those preferences where some people use compound where others use PTFE?

I’ve got both so have a choice and I’m leaning towards the compound

However, one query I have is my jointing compound although not Old has gone a little bit stiff so it won’t be easy to smooth over an olive

Is there anything that I can soften it with to make it smear a bit easier or will just temperature be sufficient?

You don't need either PTFE tape or jointing compound on a compression fittings olive. Having said that, using compound wouldn't do any harm.

Nothing on new olives, just not required.

If you're going to use jointing compound, for goodness sake get some new stuff. Messing around with old stuff that "has gone a bit stiff" may cause more harm than good and is just not worth it. A tube or tub of new jointing compound is not expensive...

I was taught a light smear on the pipe, slide the olive on, then a light smear over the olive, so that's what I do. I've tried going in dry but it's less reliable.

Thanks all for the replies
So the majority seem to favour a smidgen of a covering with some new stuff for belt and braces so I’ll give it a twirl

I use Laco liquid ptfe

I use nothing on a new fitting on good pipe, I just use copper olives, never had an issue. Reusing the fitting then yes but I use a wrap of tape.

As per madrab i have never used anything on new valves /fittings , occasionally a wrap of gas ptfe around a fitting being reused
