Filled External Crack With Mortar... Fell Out A Week Later

Crack between two terraced houses... filled and only lasted a week.

Is there something I can use to prep the wall before filling? Like some type of primer.

Or maybe I can add something to the mortar?

You may also need to open it up for a deeper fill.
