Filling crack around door frame and architrave

Hello all,

At the end of the very hot dry summer some 1-2 mm cracks appeared in the upstairs spare room at the back of my property, my guess because the wet soil dried out. From previous posts I've seen I don't think I need to worry about subsidence.

The crack runs vertically along the edge of the door frame and up into the corner of the ceiling, where it then changes to running horizontally along the base of the architrave, the wall is the end of terrace external wall. In the corner of the ceiling the small area that the crack runs inside of is about 5 mm proud of plaster beneath the crack, so I'm not sure how to fill this properly. It also looks like there has been a previous circular repair in this area.

So basically if anyone could tell me the proper way to fill the door frame, architrave and offset plaster cracks I would be very grateful.

The plastering looks pretty rough...

Faced with that, I would sand the plaster back so that it is flush. assuming that you don't have access to decent sanders, use a cork sanding block and 60 or 80 grit aluminium oxide paper.

I would then use Toupret Fibracyl in a caulking gun. It shrinks as it dries so use a filler knife to push it into the crack. Once it has shrunk back, refill with something like Toupret RedLite. Sand the Redlite with 120 to 180 grit- it is a very soft filler.

The crack along the coving- sand it flat and run a bead of caulk (eg Everbuild 125).
