Hi All,

We've got quite a few holes in painted lining papered walls to fill, left behind from previous art / TVs, etc. Am I ok to use my Toupret filler on the holes and sand down lightly even though there's painted lining paper there?

Cheers
Daz

You can tape around the area to be be filled, then remove and carefully sand down. Try a small area first to see how it looks after sanding and painting over

If you use a lightweight filler (one strike etc) you can fill flush without sanding , gentle wipe with damp sponge will tidy it for painting .

Lining paper is a very forgiving product. With the right sanders and abrasives you can even sand through the paper without it ripping. Ideally, you would use a random orbital sander connected to a dust extractor (read: vacuum cleaner) and 150-180 grit paper. When presented with a wall with a series of 7mm holes, I sand the area first to flatten any potential ridge around the edge. Sometimes, you can just tap the area with a hammer to flatten any ridge.

Apropos filler, I agree with @foxhole . Light weight fillers such as Toupret RedLite or Red Devil One Time are my go to for small holes. The filler is really easy to sand and the dust doesn't become statically charged and cling to everything. A problem with the filler powders that you add water to is that it can, on occasion (slightly) activate the wall paper paste and lift the edges whilst the filler is curing. Toupret RedLite is waterbased but the water content is much lower. I have used the Everbuild One Strike but found it doesn't feather edge as well as the toupret or Red Devil variants. That said it is much cheaper than the other two.
