I noticed recently my filter coffee pot is taking significantly longer to brew than it used to. Also, the coffee is now not as hot fresh from the pot - I can drink it down right away and it's more warm than hot.

It's a typical one-plate thing, I assume the same heat source heats the plate and the water - does this imply the element is on the way out or is that unlikely? Mine is coming up on 4 years old, when they cost £40 is it worth faffing with?

Only other thing I know can go wrong is scaling, is this a possibility?

Hmm. At 4 years old, that's a tenner a year. Maybe pension it off?
I don't think it is worth fixing. Unless you would rather not put another appliance into landfill, or wherever they go.

Heating elements tend to fail completely. It may be a defective thermostat controlling the heating element.

Yeah the cost is less annoying than it going to landfill. Sounds like tossing in a descaler is not likely to achieve anything?

I would run a load of descaler through it
Run the machine through half way then switch it off, allow to cool, then the other half
Repeat and flush with clean water

Descale once a month
