"....Sir Ed Davey described the surprise passage of the motion today as a "historic victory" that could "finally end the economic nightmare of the Conservatives' broken Brexit deal....."

Let's hope this is the beginning of the end and finally rid ourselves or the Boris legacy that is a failed right wing folly.

It's probably an omen but your link doesn't work.

Oh....

Surprise tied vote in Commons sees bid to re-join customs union progress

The Liberal Democrats are continuing their efforts to get the UK to move closer to the European Union in a bid to boost the economy.

One of their MPs, Dr Al Pinkerton (who replaced arch Brexiteer Lord Michael Gove in the Commons) has tabled a Ten Minute Rule Motion to mandate that the government negotiates with the EU with a view to agreeing a customs union, easing trade friction.

There was a vote in the Commons on advancing the bill to second reading - and it turned out to be tied.

The result was 100 votes in favour, and 100 votes against.

A tied vote means that the Speaker or his deputy in the chair casts the deciding vote, so Caroline Nokes said: "In accordance with precedent, I will cast the casting vote 'aye' to allow further debate."

A second reading debate is scheduled for Friday, 16 January.

Lib Dems cheered loudly, and one MP mocked the party's campaign literature by quipping: "Put that on a bar chart!"

Although the bill is unlikely to make much progress, at least for today, they might well roll out another one of their slogans - 'Winning Here'...

Did the referendum originally have a position on the customs union? I don't know whether anything was stated before the vote, do others know?

It could easily be argued that joining it would be re-joining the EU, which would be contrary to the outcome of the referendum.

It may be a good idea (speaking as a leave voter), but Starmer is too toxic to do it, it would be assumed that this would be merely the first step towards re-joining, as the public simply don't trust him at all.

Most Brexers claim that (since it was a massive failure) it was a yes/no option. The hard core (anti-UK Brexit) voters wanted zero deals and to cut all ties with Europe and inflict as much damage as possible. You tell me?

I wondered if it was stated anywhere whether we'd be in or out of it. I don't remember it being discussed, but it was many years ago now. If so that should be obeyed.

I wouldn't have a problem with it, it's probably sensible. But I'm sure there would be downsides and, as we see repeatedly, the EU would want to take many billions a year off us for it. It's a protectionist racket, they won't let us in for nothing.

But the biggest problem is that the public hate Starmer, and everything he does. If he proposed this it would be (rightly) seen as a step towards going back in against the will of the people.

Nothing prevents a customs union from outside the EU. There are many in place.

there will of course be a price to pay and of course if we start now it will be on the table just in time for a new government to scrap it.

Gotta love the thread title "Finally, a grown-up government." Then talks about Ed Davie, the leader of the Liberal Democrats
:ROFLMAO: Nosenout delivers comedy gold again.

…..says a Boris horn-smoker. Go figure…

Brexit - utter dog turd.

obviously a Reform govt would reverse it because Reform are focused in destroying this country

Reforms only chance of power is a very weak coalition with the Tories -which would be in permanent turmoil so they wouldnt get anything done

bring it on I say lets have a laugh
