Is it possible to achieve the required 20mins of fire protection with a 35mm modern, moulded, hollow/honeycomb door painted with an intumescent paint or similar product? (Frame strips would be used as well, of course.)

All I can find on Google relates to conserving solid wooden doors with thinner panelling in old houses. If it can be done to virtually any door, it could be half the price of buying fire doors with the same performance.

It pains me when I read things like 'some are and some are not'. Surely it either complies or it doesn't!?

However, I will also contact BC to see what they have to say.

If anyone else has any ideas please do tell.

Well unfortunately such systems do not suit all kinds of doors of which there are many, it is dependent upon the condition of the existing door and the standard of the workmanship so there are many variables. People forget that the Building Regulations are not actually set in stone, this leaves inspectors to make judgement calls as they see fit, as such some inspectors will be more open than others. The system in the other thread was actually recommended to me by an LA inspector, other inspectors have stated they do not consider it effective. Try dealing with it all day every day!
