A friend rents out a smal Victorian terraced house, in which one of the bedrooms is over a storage space that was once a garage. He has a bee in his bonnet about the fire resistance of the ceiling of the storage space. I'd assumed it was lathe and plaster, but he thinks it might be cementitious. He might be worrying needlessly, but wants to do something about it, so can anyone suggest a way that will involve the least faff? He's thinking of battening and overboarding it but I wondered if it could be coated in something.

Is the storage space higher risk of catching fire than the rest of the house?

It seems an odd thing tobworry about.

Intumescent paint wont offer the same fire resistance as a plasterboard fire break. It might in theory, but the construction materials of the existing ceiling are unknown.

I assume all walls are brick, as studwork walls would allow fire to get past the ceiling.

Probably less risk, depending on what the tenant stores there. I said the same as you but he wants to do it. Walls are solid, not stud. Thanks.

double plaster board the ceiling from below and use mineral wool to insulate the floor void. Improves the thermal insulation and should give an extra 30 mins to an hour burn time easy.
