I once had a raised Harth hearth and a gas fire I had the fire taken out and made the hearth almost flush in the sanded floorboards. Inside the fireplace I tiled it and fitted a wine rack and the space where the hearth was in the floorboards I stuck down a montage of favourite wine and other drinks labels and topped it off with some clear perspex which finished flush with the floor but could lift it to add labels.
I have since put down oak floor which covered the whole.
No sticky up hearth does make the room look bigger.

It's especially children and older people that have issues with this type of hearth.
