I have a fireplace where the inner (opening) is level with the concrete floor where a gas fire has been removed. We're going to have an open fire (simple fire basket) but later will install an inset stove. Am I right that I need to create a hearth area 50mm high in front of the fire opening / stove front and 300mm depth, or can I just tile onto the concrete floor?

If I need to construct the raised hearth, would simple screed be OK if I box it and fill then level? I'd also need to make the inner part of the fireplace opening level so same question - normal screed mix OK for this? If not do I need a higher temp product? The hearth area will be tiled after curing. I've read through loads of posts and there's mixed responses.
