Fireplace Lintel

Hi,

I'm looking to enlarge the original fireplace to house the AV equipment for the TV above.
I have found the lintel but concerned about removing the bricks up to it as there seems to be a crack in it.

It seems that the bricks under it dropped and we're plastered over quite some time ago.

Is this crack a cause for concern or can I go ahead and remove the bricks underneath?
