Fireplace removal

Hi,

We are looking at removing the gas fire and fireplace from our dining room. It is fitted into an external chimney breast. All the research I've done says that we need to include a vent into the room when we cover over the opening. Part of the reason for removing the fire is that we suffer from strong downdraughts down the chimneys which are only about 30cm apart. I have fitted an H-pot to the chimney for the lounge next door as we use the open fire place. However, we still have smoke come down the chimney into the dining room. Capping the chimney and putting a vent into the space may mean that we still suffer from this.

As the house is a 1930s bungalow, it has suspended timber floors. Would it be okay to somehow ventilate into the underfloor space instead?

If the chimney is on an external wall, you could chop a vent into the outer wall into the fireplace, therefore allowing you to fully block of the front of the chimney.
Also, drop a "pepperpot" onto the chimney pot:
