hi do i need to drain down the radiators? im fitting a new replacement radiator upstairs and it is slightly bigger than the existing one, i might have to alter the pipework if i do this can i use solder fittings? or is compression or pushfit best? it is not a combi system it has 2x tanks in the loft and a water storage tank....cheers scott

Yes you have to drain - unless you freeze the pipes - and you can use any fittings you like.

due to the rad being upstairs can i not drain say half the system eg the water equivelant from the upstairs rads?

You only need to drain down as much as you require to empty the rad.
