Fitting a door of unusual dimensions

don't sand it off. that would be silly. light sand = 120-400 grade, probably by hand unless you're very careful with the power sander.

give the end grain plenty of preservative. it will suck it up.

at this point i am off - i think you should just get on with it.

if you want your door to last a while, just pay it attention. oils are a better finish if you are going to maintain. otherwise a film coating like gloss or wood stain is your best bet.

or you could go to your local pvcu fitters yard and ask if they have any old doors they have taken off ! i get loads of these (hard wood too ) and give them away (saves on skips ) even if it costs you a 10er happy days :wink:
