Hi new to this, but looking to fit a window into the side wall of my house to let some light into the hall. I only want a smallish window say no more that 500mm wide by 600mm deep. The question is, Do I need a lintal or RSJ for such a small opening? Please advise.

Yes you likely need a lintel but you won't get any answers as to what type unless you explain what the walls made of. Needs Building Regs Approval or a Fensa approved fitter to do the work if you care about that sort of thing.
