Hi, I hae fitted many switches in the past but this switch is testing my patience. im sure the switch is dead.
Got 2 switches from b and q today, 1 for the bedroom and 1 for the front room.
bedroom has 2 brown connected together (C L1) and 1 brown on its own (L2). Also has a earth connected to the inner metal box where the wires come from.

this is just a simple 1 switch each room to 1 light bulb. Dam thing will not light up. checked it over and over but nothing.

Old unit says common at the top but also shows L1 at the same socket, L2 bottom right and L3 bottom left. L3 wasnt being used.

New light dimmer has LIVE, S and a wavey line with a wavey arrow going through it.

How should this be wired to work. Im sure ive already got it corrct but wanna make sure.

I Live in a Flat if that makes any difference to the wiring, im not sure but may help for information.

Dont know if you can see these pics, first time uploding on this site. Theres an album anyway.
the broken switch is the old one, the other is the new dimmer. I have 2 of these and both dont work.
someone please describe how these are wired to confirm what im thinking.[/img]

40w might be under load, check the spec on the dimmer units via instructions or manufactures web site.

I agree, you have the wrong dimmer.

When you get the right (master) dimmer:

Whatever conductors you have that went into the L1 on the old switch should go into the "LIVE" terminal on the dimmer,

Whatever went into the L2 terminal on the old switch goes into the terminal with the arrow/wiggly line.

Nothing goes into the S terminal. Its not used.

NOTE

Those Doyle & Tratt dimmers (also marketed by Varilight & Crabtree) cannot be used in two way circuits unless you have acompatable slave dimmer at the other end. They do not work like standard dimmers.

It was given to me from a woker there who advised that one, but I have never heard of a slave unit. Never had 2 switches in my room.

Now i no, the dimmers will be taken back and changed. I will then fit the new ones.
