Hi there I and trying to change a light switch in my house because the switch is broken it’s a 1 gang 2 way on my stair case

I have removed the switch from the wall and I have 1 brown wire and one grey wire connected to the top and the same 2 wires at the bottom
The switch I have bought only only has 1 com connection point so do I put both brown wires in there
Any advice please

i gang 2 way - has 3 connections points available
pictures of old switch and new switch may help - with wiring

does it also have another switch to turn lights on off - so 2 switches

did you take photos before you disconnected

Yes there is a light switch at the top of the stairs that control the same light

The old switch is an intermediate the new is a 2 way, it wont work.

I assume you have 3 or more switches on the stairs?

is it only 2 switches that control that light - or do you have 3
you have an intermediate switch in the picture a 2 way does not replace that

because the switch is broken
how do you know - anything else changed to the other switches
do you have a mulitmeter and know how to use it - you could then test the switch

No there is only 2 switches for my hall way light one on the staircase and one on the landing

When I press the switch it doesn’t click anymore it feels like something has become disconnected inside it just moves freely

you can use an intermediate as a 2way as far as i can research - Never done that - i think as i dont know how its all wired up and its NOT setup as a 2way switch - just purchase an intermediate switch and use as a direct replacement
maybe the 3rd switch has been removed and connected up and then covered
i know my brother had this with a 3 way system in his house , one switch was covered over when the room was dot/dab

Sorry my mistake there is a 3rd switch at the bottom of the 3rd floor staircase

No there is only 2 switches for my hall way light one on the staircase and one on the landing
The wiring tells a different story, it appears to be the intermediate (middle) switch of 3 but it is possible one has previously been removed.
