I have purchased a replacement 6' fluorescent light fitting which is identical to the original, despite that being 15 yrs old (I imagine these don't change much!) . As I am replacing like for like it seems a very simple job, as all the wiring is in place. However I am slightly baffled by the wiring connection on existing fitting as there are two 3 core cable entering thru' the ceiling into the fixture batten. However the ends of two red cables are simply fed into a connector (not attached to fitting) and the two black cables and earth are fed into the L,N,E connector on the appliance. I would have expected one red and one black and earth to be fed into the appliance , as recommended in the fitting instructions! I assume that the set up is due to the type of wiring circuit adopted when the house was completely rewired 15 yrs ago. It has worked perfectly well in the past so it seems more than logical (and safe) to adopt the current wiring setup. Before I do so, any observations would be most appreciated.

The black (blue) wire connected to the live terminal would normally be fitted with a red (brown) sleeve to identify it as a switched live, but it often gets omitted or lost. Some people used a piece of red PVC tape, but over time the adhesive dries out and it falls off.

many thanks to you both for your feedback. I can now confidently proceed with my installation. I don't mess about with stuff unless I feel sure that its ok to do so!! Thanks again, Lyn :D
