After a bit of advice regarding shelving. I have a large alcove measuring nearly 2m (193cm) x 38cm, and would like to put a few shelves up to store the childrens toys etc (Am rapidly running out of floor space :) ).

I was thinking about the "torsion box" approach with two sheets of MDF/ply with a frame between them using 2x1 or 2x2. However Im wondering if this would be strong enough over this distance without a front central vertical support?

Any ideas?

Three uprights with a centre section of mdf would be easier, then fit shelving between uprights.Or construct one free standing shelf unit and secure to wall.
Long open shelving tends to look untidy.

Agreed with foxhole , however if you do really want to have a fully open shelf go with your original idea but use angle iron instead of timber (although you can use timber to face up the steel and hide it), it'll be much stronger and won't sag over time.

might be cheaper to look at, say, Ikea, units and slot them in ?

OK Thanks for the advice guys. I'll probably go with the 3 upright approach. Good suggestion with the angle iron though, never thought of that.
