I need to fix a hand rail to a strangly narrow newel post. it's not a 'burbidge' so have no fixing brackets - can't notch it in as it's (the handrail) nearly as as wide as the newel.WhadoIdo? Cut a tenon on the end of the handrail and notch that in?

cut the tennon 1/3 width of handrail [dependant on mortice chisel]half to 2/3 depth of newel
if the newel is at the top off the stairs the mortice is a triangular shape the bottom follows the angle off the hand rail the top is at right angles to the newel
at the bottom the slope is on the top

pin into place with an ofset dowel with the hole in the handrail 2mm nearer the shoulder so when you knock the dowel home it pulls tight
