I have another exterior woodwork project to kick off.

Custom taper sawn tantalized wood arrived today …. 60m of ‘wood’ capping to fit to a single brick think wall … see sketch:

The wall is a mixture of concrete block & brick ….

Q.1 should I put a DPC under the wood, this would keep it off damp wall (holds back earth beds) .. only negative I saw was that it would also trap any water that gets underneath when it rains.

Q.2 Need a good method of fixing … just simply gluing on with no-more-nails … is going to fail.
My mate suggested using Thunder bolts …. Issue with these if I just fitted Thunderbolts water is going to collect where they crush into wood. I could counter-bore the wood to recess bolt heads .. but to avoid these ‘holes’ filling with water would need to plug .. and not going to be easy to get a plug cutter in large enough diameter to suit Thunderbolts.

So anybody go a suggestion for fitting these cappings, they have to take occasionally being stood on … but other than that they are decorative.

Using some common catalogues items as discussion points:
Frame Screws http://tinyurl.com/h9uu7yr

Fischer Hammerfix http://tinyurl.com/j5je68z
or

Thunderbolt http://goo.gl/zHBxld

RAWL LX screw http://goo.gl/jKaxaG

Q.3 at corners, I am sort of guessing no point in jointing, just mitre cut (or but joint) as any joint is going to open an close with the seasons …

Use concrete screws, much smaller head than thunderbolts and just as good. a plug cutter should cover them ok

Not sure about the dpc, my gut would say don't the amount of water coming from the wall will be minute and a bit of air might remove it. Probably that do less damage than water trapped in between the dpc and wood

oh just checked the link, concrete screws are frame screws. The shank is only 6mm so id guess the head is 10mm or so

I pay about 19 quid for a box of 100 at my local merchant. not spax but same thing. £48 is ridiculous

I use olympic fixings. Mainly because thats what is stocked at my merchant. I order spax stuff for specialist screws like lost head decking screws and stainless steel stuff.

Managed to get them form local Travis Perkins at £13 incl vat per 100 box.

Now need to decide whether to glue mitres or just leave them.
