Flickering lights

If you can find a short piece of hosepipe or similar, put one end in your ear then probe around with the other. You can get right up to areas where you wouldn't otherwise want to be.

Just to update people and to close this off...

the fault was at the top of the pole in the street. The flickering of every appliance in the house rapidly worsened yesterday, to the point where we were sat with candles and everything switched off. There was no real evidence that there was major arcing in the house causing it - no smell of melting cable! However I took a look at the connections I could see outside and could distinctly hear crackling at the top of the pole and even saw some sparks.

So called out Southern Electric last night. Their guys arrived, agreed the fault was on the pole and sorted the connection with good grace. Everything seems fine now, so hopefully it's sorted :)

Thank you all again for your input.
