Hi everyone,
whilst searching the net for why i had condensation and therefore damp in the corners of some of my rooms, i discovered this forum and its been a goldmine! (thanks all)
I now know my (recently bought) house has flintlock guttering that probably needed removing many years ago and is probably responsible for this - and probably why there is some dodgy plastering in some rooms where they've tried to cover it up

I am getting the windows replaced shortly as there are some very cold drafts coming through in the living room (old wooden frames), and im hoping it will also help with the condensation. After reading the guttering threads on here i'm now terrified of getting the upstairs windows replaced due to the guttering. All this talk of sagging, weight bearing etc - i'm worried that part of my house is going to collapse once they remove the windows!

Do they need to do anything special when replacing the windows? should i be going with some kind of specialist company?

leeniepie,

Given your worries then why not post pics on here showing your windows, and pics of the damp areas?
A camera fixed to a long stick, eg a tile lath, will get you pics of above and below above the guttering?
For now do nothing about replacing windows until you have more info from here.

get the finlocks removed. Things will improve. Likely window replacement wont help much but will increase the condensation on the coldest areas and a little less on the windows.

unfortunately i dont have the money to have them removed as i've just had a driveway built and the lining replaced in the roof.

i've literally just scrubbed all the mould off today as i couldnt stand it anymore *doh* but basically its along the walls at the front of the house, up along the top of the wall by the ceiling, in the corners of the two bedrooms and some inside the built in cupboard in one room (same area, wall near ceiling and ceiling of cupboard itself
