is there an official way of calculating this?

i can think of at least three ways

1: count all floor space to the circuit with the nearest socket
2: count all floor space withing a set distance of a socket to the circuit that socket is on (even if there is overlap with sockets from other circuits)
3: count all rooms that contain any sockets on a circuit to that circuit.

Area of room 1 + area of room 2 + area of room 3.
Unless you live in a mansion I doubt your home will exceed the 100²m rule.

right sure but what about when there are mutliple circuits serving a room do you count the entire room to all of them?

and if so what if you have a large hall thats greater than 10M by 10M

just wondering you understand ;)

Its hard to be exact, but devide the room up into 'zones' of which socket is nearest, and add up the areas of the zones on each circuit would be the most logical way of doing it, actually a quick esitimate of the same would be even more sensible :) (its hardly the most important design consideration if you are only a little out...)

The floor area of houses in the UK is normally the area enclosed by the external walls, excluding the external walls, including internal walls.

The US, I understand, includes the external walls too. So they appear to have bigger houses.
