I am about to lay a tiled floor in a kitchen. I have read an article on tiling which tells you to start in the middle of the floor. Is this necessary? Also, is it important to check the level of each tile as you lay it and how should I prepare a bare, dusty but level screeded solid floor for tiling?

Best to find the centre of the room and work out whether to tile from, or straddle the centres line(s). It's the best way to ensure even tiling at all sides of the room. If your floor is flat then as long as you use a notched trowel then it should be a case of trowelling the adhesive on and dropping the tiles down and applying a little pressure. If you're consistant in your method then the floor will be as flat as the base you laid it on.
What's the base you're tiling onto? If it's dusty then you want to brush, vacuum then mop the floor.
