Hi

I'm just about to have a new kitchen installed in what used to be my dining room and the missus wants me to tile the floor, unfortunately its floorboards! I've been told to put down 1/2" marine ply and screw it down every 6"! is this right? as its a suspended floor can i use something under the ply to insulate it?

cheers guys

yes, screw down the ply and use floor tile adheise and grout with a flexible aditive to allow for expansion and contraction in the floor,
personally i wouldn't worry about insulation

Every bit of info I've ever read says you need at least 1" to 1 1/4" ply. Anything less allows movement and tile cracking. I'd take up the floorboards and start again with just the ply, as you'll end up needing stepladders to get in and out of rooms! (Which is just what I did do)
