I am repairing the floorboards on the landing and have had to replace a section that is 3 boards width. I have purchased the nearest metric equivalent but of course there is a shortfall in height and width. I have some dpc and /or sandpaper to gain the correct height but the gap across the width is 3/4" over a span of 13 3/4".

Do I:

i) Space the boards out such that the gap is spread evenly across the 3 boards.
ii) Cut away the tongue and try to manufacture a 3/4" fillet.
iii) Any other suggestions.

My gut feeling is that the gap should be filled somehow.

TIA

heeelllooo hondacrm

floor boards are still done in imperial
the boards you get from the sheds are usualy 2mm smaller in thickness than wood yards or builders merchants now measure the gap accuratley depth and width
there is a very good chance the depth and width will be coverd

armed with your accurate measurements off the width at several points assuming they are within a few 2mm of each other take the average

if there is going to be a gap ask them nicely to take the next sized board up and rip it down to size

Thanks for the speedy response big-all.

I didn't know floorboards were available in imperial. As you say, 'we are all still learning'

I don't want to ignore your advice but as usual the time to complete the task is limited (like today!). All the boards are cut to length and ready to be fixed.

Any views on the way to go?

ok no probs :D needs must

yep whatevers to hand as long as it isnt perishable as you say sandpaper damp proof cardboard what ever staple to the joists for simplicity
make shure all edges are supported either joined on the joists by txg or a bit of 2"x1" screwed along the edges to be joined

screw and glue the odd bit onto the board your laying

the quoted sizes for plained [dressed ]timber is the stock sawn size off the timber minus the 6mm planing operation so 6"x1" planed comes out at 5 3/4" x3/4"
