coming in early 2015 apparently. An innovative boiler that heats and produces some electricity at the same time. Supposedly paying for itself in energy savings over 5 yrs. Free boiler - you just pay for the install.

Quite a long time in the making and supposed to be groundbreaking....

Does this have potential to be successful????

It does have a lot of potential, but not in the form and specification I saw a few months ago.

Too high an input for not enough output IMHO.

They need to design the boiler to operate at much lower kw's for it to be worthwhile.

I offered to help them as my house is perfectly set up for this kind of thing but their internal communications are not the greatest.

Or maybe I just smell funny

you need to be using £100 worth of gas pcm to make fitting one viable so not suitable for many households. It wouldnt be likely they would pour so much ££££ into this if the end product wasnt right?

The electricity output is so small that its not much use for anything!

2000 kWh per annum is not a big proportion of the 15,000 that most people use.

The figures are reliant on several things. But ultimately, long, low and slow is the key

Having a minimum burner output of 7kw for 1kW electricity is too high.

To make it worthwhile for normal people it needs to be half that. Even then with a thermal store.

Let's hope that they have been better than Baxi with the reliability side of things.

Seems unlikely to me.

2000kWhrs at say 15p each is £300 a year in 'free' electricity.

I have the sneaky feeling that in order to generate this leccy more gas will be burned than an ordinary condensing boiler would use, substantially offsetting the £300 of 'free' leccy.

Energy cannot be conjured out of nowhere, for nothing.

On reflection I predict it will be a success!

All of these boilers designed to provide electricity have the same disadvantage.

They ALL only provide electricity when they are providing heating.

I don't know why the Baxi one needed to be on heating though. I don't know why the Sterling engine could not run on its own. Anyone know why?

Tony

The economics are against them. They need it to be very reliable for this to work. Note you have to buy your energy from Flow so you'll end up paying over the odds for that the pay for the cost of the boiler.

It was probably the sludge bucket in your garage that resembles a nasa rocket booster that put them off.
