ford escort temperature gauge

Hi I have a 1.8 zetec P reg escort. Temperature gauge not working. Not sure if it is sender or gauge has anyone any idea how to test or eliminate the problem. The car runs OK just like to solve this problem,thanks.

If you connect the terminal on the sensor to earth, if the sensor is faulty it will read max temperature.

There is a twin cable going to the sensor. which wire do I connect to earth to give a reading on the temperature gauge .Thanks

In that case you probably connect them both together. I'm not familiar with that engine I'm afraid.
