I own a 1999 Focus Ghia with air con. On Saturday a loud screech came from under the bonnet followed by 10 minutes of what sounded like air or gas escaping. Couldn't see where from and no fluids have leaked.

The car runs fine, except the aircon now doesn't work (the light still comes on on the dashboard when pressed). I suspect that a seal or pipe has ruptured but does anyone have any ideas if this is the case? Also any ideas how much is would cost to fix?

Thanks.

It's possible that the compressor seized (the screech would be the fan belt slipping). It's possible that during seizing it knocked a hole in the case or the shaft seal also failed and the hissing would be the gas escaping.

DON'T GO TO A CAR DEALER, go to either an aircon specialist or a tractor dealer.

HI,

Thanks for the reply.

The car had actually been turned off for a couple of hours when the screech etc. was heard.

Could the fan belt slip as you've suggested in this instance or is there another explanation?
