Father got a 55 ford focus 1.6. 50k on clock started to run badly (misfire) occasional back fire, replaced plugs, did compression test on all 4 pots -ok. Spark from all leads. was thinking might have jumped a tooth on belt ? or injector fault any thoughts please .

It came on steady first then started flashing. (he is 84 so drove car back home) hope not done too much damage.

The spark from the plugs look good. could the coil pack be striking at the wrong times ? is that what the problems were with them.

The spark may appear to be fine on this, but the coil pack may break down when the plugs are under compression so its not a final test.
A diagnostic check should indicate which route to take, and if it is coil pack related, fit new plugs too.

Do post back....
You may find that the management light may go off on its own accord - if it doesn't, any garage with diagnostic gear can sort this for you.
Be lucky!

He certainly does, and good on yer Grahame......
A new coil pack on these isn't too expensive from a factors - around £50 for a German make, if I recall - but you can get them cheaper.
