Hello,

Can anyone with the knowledge tell me whether an extension carried out in 2001 to a 1930s bungalow would only have needed to match the depth of the existing 1930s shallow foundations of the original building it adjoins, or would have required deeper foundations similar to what a new build of that time would have needed?

Many thanks,
Sarah

Generally, for many years, building inspectors have demanded that extension foundations go down at least 750 - 1000mm below g.l. regardless of the depth of the original house footings.

There is often little logic to this; the only way to check is to dig down.

Thanks Tony. So you think it would have had to be that depth in 2001?
