hi could anyone help me decide which foundation would be best near to a group of oaks and poplars.the oaks have t.p.o's. The soil is a stiff clay and the foundations would have to be between 8 and 10 metres from the trees.thanks

Speak to your building control office. They will probably say dig your trench and then they will inspect it. They're the ones that will sign it off.

You could do with putting more info on here. If your building is more than 10m your OK but you need to tell us that. Besides, as above.

Strip footings might be an option but they will need to be deep.

It depends on the Volume Change Potential (VCP) of the soil. Assuming a medium VCP the NHBC guideline recommend a depth of nearly 2.5m when you have an Oak or Poplar within 10m.
If it's a high VCP then Piles might be a better option.

Might be sensible to have a sample of soil tested and speak to an engineer.

Bear in mind that NHBC recommend to assumed high shrinkage if the soil index is unknown. Therefore could be into realms of >2.5m.

Depend on what you plan to build you might want to get an engineer involved.

a group of oaks within 10m in clay is almost certainly going to be 2.5m deep and or reinforced
