Im in the middle of converting a garage into a annex and iv noticed that water is running in between the external walls outside and the concrete path and penetrating into the concrete slab inside i was thinking of digging a 4"trench outside and digging down a foot and filling the trench with pea gravell does any one have any advice on how to solve this damp issue

If its possible, incorporate a weeping drain into your trenched area, with the exit slowly falling into a soakaway. A weeping drain is plastic pipe which has slots cut into it, allowing surface water to enter the pipe and be slowly drained away - its used on septic tank outfalls as well as other places. At the same time its worth coating the exposed wall with some Aquaseal to make the brick or blockwork as water tight as possible. Filling the trench with gravel is a good idea, but it really depends on the porosity of the earth beneath to make a difference - hence the need for some sort of drain. Cheers John

thanx for the reply john i was thinking of putting building plastic up against the building as well to stop it would this be ok to do and ill tank the walls inside with a tanking solution cheers nathan

Certainly an external membrane up against a (primed and coated) wall can only help matters, and likewise the internal treatment, but you'll have to go pretty deep if you can to prevent the water wicking up the wall.....getting rid of any standing water outside is the best way if possible. Good luck with it! Cheers John
