French Polishing... DIY or not?

I'm having new stair parts installed this week, the handrail is made of mahogany and came sanded/unfinished from the supplier.

Once the stair parts are installed the handrail will need finishing. Am i right in thinking it needs 'french polishing' and is this something i can do myself or should i hire in a pro?

The handrail isn't that elaborate and spans a small terraced house staircase over 2 x floors. The finish i'm after is something like this.

If you want a finish like in the pic you definitely need a pro job , maybe from the firm on the pic.
