Buying house. Corner plot, with 2.5m high privett bushes on both sides between the pavement and house.
It is lovely and enclosed.

The front gate is a standard small, 1m gate.
Like this size

Wifey wants to put a 2m gate here, for privacy and we have little ones.
Like this (but maybe painted a dark colour)

Bear in mind, even a 2m gate will be smaller than the privett hedge on either side.

I understand that this is not covered by PD, which is a max 1m for gates facing a road.

I guess my options are

A) do it and hope no-one complains, and, no planning officer sees it and raises it as an issue / let 4 years pass.

B) pay for pre-planning to see if they'd accept it, then, pay for planning

Option B seems v.expensive for a new gate.

What would you do?

Assuming no neighbours complain, what chances do you give it of flying under the radar?

Seeing as the privett is so high (and 100 years old), who think planning would pass as it (in my opinion) wont look out of place?

Not in a conservation area ,SE England

Would the same rules apply if you have a metal (decorative) gate?
You could attach a black painted board to it.
Some houses near me have metal gates with painted panels

The limited info on the planning portal doesn't say anything about materials, just height.
I think I'll just do it. Worst case, I can change it

I'd just do it, if you try Option B they'll be all over you like a rash I would expect..
