The wall between our drive and next door's is in a bad condition and needs to be rebuilt. It is the side that is our responsibility.

At present it is just under 6 feet high with a pillar at the pavement end. However when I rebuild it I want to have a much lower wall, due in part to costs, but mainly to match it to the height of the wall the other side of the property (the 'semi' side).

There are 3 sets of 'semi's' identical to ours, and all have lower dividing walls.

What I'd like to know is do I have to build the wall back to the existing height, or can I rebuild it to any height?

We get on reasonably well with the neighbours, but want to know the legal position before putting forward any plans..the local council won't actually say what the position is!

ASFAIK the only stipulation we have on our property is that if we reinstate a front wall or fence) across the drive it can't be more than 1m in height..

I've put some pictures Here to better illustrate.

i'm fairly certain, a 6'-0" high wall is set at this height, purely for ones own privacy.

re-building the wall at a lesser height should not be a problem.

it is when a homeowner wishes to increase the height of a wall that problems arise. most councils will only allow the front elevation wall (close to the highway) to be built to a height of 1m.

it may be prudent to take photographs of the existing wall documenting its current height prior to demolition. this information may be useful should you wish to reinstate its current height.
