Could someone explain how the 'anti-frost' mode works on Vaillant boilers? Does this activate the boiler / heating system if the temperature drops below X deg C?

Thanks

It depends somewhat on the controller.

On the weather compensated units, once the outside temperature drops below 3°, the boiler circulates water for a few minutes and monitors the flow temperature in order to decide whether to fire the boiler.

Not sure exactly what happens without the weather compensator - it is not described in the manual beyond the statement that 'the boiler has an integral frost thermostat which is designed for protection of the boiler'.

If your pipework is vulnerable to frost, then you will need an external frost stat.

The boiler/system is on a weather compensator so it should activate when the outside temp drops below 3degC.... at what point does it fire the boiler?

On the VRC470, it fires if the flow temperature in the pipework is less than 13°.

Thank you all for the comments.

Presumably this set up / protection overrides any other settings which the user may set on the programmers and stats?

You can only defeat it in the installer menus (and even then, only partially).

Biggest problem would of course be the user turning the boiler off - which you can't do anything to prevent!

Good point! Well I guess that is something put on a notice next to the boiler in big letters!
