Please can some one help i woke up this morning to find my downstairs lights didnt work i checked the CU and the Fuse had blown so i replaced the fuse and it blew again after rougthly 5 mins. I have a small tester and it seems i have a live to earth short and was wondering if anyone could please explain how this would happen and how i go about resolving it as i really am scratching my head with this one and am quite desperate to get it resovled. Also I have had no work done in my house diy etc they just all of a sudden didnt work. I'd be greatful for any information thanks..

It's probably a loose live conductor touching a metal backbox/light fitting, Turn off the 'leccy and check all the switches/fittings.

While you are going around checking, tighten up all the terminal screws and check everything is correctly sleeved.

the first thing to do is inspect everything on the circuit for obvious issues. Fixup anything like lack of earth sleeving, wires fallen out of terminals, obviously damaged insulation (cover it with sleeving) etc.

If the fault is still there after you've done that you will have to split the circuit into sections and test each individually until you find the problem.

If you have any downlighters in a ceiling have a look at them for cable melted by the heat of the lamp.

Also worthwhile checking for water in an outside light. Any signs of a leak anywhere inside?

Thanks everyone I have taken down the lights and found that all my earth wires in my light fittings do not have sleeves. Would this most likely be causing the problem??

If they touch something live then it would cause the trips. Fix that issue and then if you still have the original problem start looking for other ones.
